Feedback Forum: Notification Cleaning

We've got even more spring cleaning going on in the code, and want your feedback before we implement this change! Many users read their notifications and never delete them, but also never revisit those old notifications. We're considering an update that will automatically delete notifications older than 2 years as this will greatly reduce bulk and speed up the entire messaging system, but I wanted to first ask if there are any old notifications that you might want to save as exceptions from this automatic deletions. For example, do you feel attached to your Kith Transformation notifications and want to save those? Do you want to save your Trade Completed notifications? Please let us know if there are any exceptions that come to mind, and thank you all again for helping to make Tattered World the best it can be!

Alternate/additional suggestion: Allow for archiving of notifications. That way, users can choose which notifications to protect, while still allowing for deletion of old notifications.

Seconding the suggestion of a way to archive specific notifications, if possible!
Letting users pick what they want to keep and then automatically deleting the rest seems like a good compromise that doesn't require splitting things by individual category!
That being said, that would probably require more of a redo of the notification setup than simply deleting things would, so my thoughts aside from that:
- Delete all forum post notifications (new threads, new replies)
- Leave every other type of notification
Reasoning:
- I would wager that 99.9% of existing notifications in the system right now are unread Announcement notifications on accounts that are inactive.
- This is because Announcements is automatically subbed to, so even if a user joins and doesn't play for more than 30 seconds, their account will still be generating consistent new notifications
- This also adds up significantly the longer the site runs, as more and more dead accounts add up
- Every other type of notification, to my knowledge, requires active use of the site to initiate - trades, item use, Kith level ups, achievements, etc
- That means that inactive accounts are not generating -any- of these notifications once they go inactive, so they don't continue to build up as spam in the same way forum announcements do
An additional option might be to target inactive account forum subscriptions directly, too? I'm not sure how feasible it'd be to have them automatically deactivate after X amount of inactivity (with a single system notification to say "you've been unsubbed, you can resub over here" for if they return to the site.)
Could also be an option to not automatically subscribe every single new user to the Announcements automatically, and just point users in that direction in the new account setup stage? If users aren't reading the tutorials at that point they're less likely to be reading the announcements themselves too, I'd wager.
That suggest is less necessary probably if automated deletion is happening, but eh. I wrote it so I'll post it.

i agree w silver,, being able to lock notifs would protect the sentimental ones and get rid of the fluff. this would also have the handy dandy side effect of automatically sorting those sentimental notifs to the back over time :3

I'm also with Silvers' suggestion, I would like to choose which notifications get kept. Users will have different opinions on what is important versus spam/unnecessary.

I really like all my notifications, I delete some but in general I like having a little archive to look back on to see my progress.
I like a lot of what Himochi and Silver said, but I don't have many of my own ideas.
I think I'm just really sentimental haha

This isn't going to affect me much because I delete all my notifications semi-regularly, so I am going to abstain from voting. However, I think Silver and Himochi's posts offer some good ideas for those that do like to keep certain notifications.

I agree with Silver and Himochi, I think the archiving is a good idea. However, if not, then I would like to keep kith transformations and achievements.
