Monthly Update: Strategy Effects!
Posted on July 24, 2020All 36 Hope Strategies have been updated with new damage calculations and special effects! The new effects range from targeting all enemies, causing your enemies to lose their turn or take more damage, temporarily increasing your defense or decreasing their ability scores, and even a way to regain a bit of HP while fighting! The damage calculations have been updated to work off a percentage of the enemy's health, with your Kith receiving more or less damage from multiple factors, far more than just your ability score versus their ability score! There's small modifiers for your Kith species, personality, and random luck that can all add or subtract from the damage you do in battle.
Though we are keeping the modifiers hidden, you can make an educated guess at what your Kith might be better suited for based on their species and personality. For example, a stammering, bashful Kith might not be the best choice to Intimidate your opponents, but a Scalyx's ferocious bark is sure to strike terror into their little Snarl hearts! Do Snarls have hearts? Anyway!
You can take a quick look at each of the 36 updated Strategies in the list below to see what new effects have been added to them, and if that may change up which Strategies you prefer to use in battle. Generally, the chances listed describe the percentage of effectiveness, where "very small" is less than 20%, while "very good" is over 80%.

These changes have to be made one by one, so you'll notice them happening over the next couple of hours. Please be patient with staff while we implement this huge update and wait an hour before reporting any issues to the Technical Support Forum. We're working as fast as we can!
I'd also like to note that Snarls have not yet been updated to match these changes, so there may be a period of time where battling with these new Strategies feels oddly imbalanced. I hope to have the next complexity update ready for you next week, though, so that's something to look forward to!
This update is considered a beta-test change, so we are open to any and all feedback you have on the balance and enjoyment of the battle system with this added complexity. Though we hope to get it right on the first try, there's always room for improvement, right?
