    October Event: A Tragic Tale

    by The Witch » October 19, 2017 08:09 PM

It's okay Hero, you can hold my hand if you're scared! I know lots of people don’t like coming to the graveyard because it makes them feel bad. But Dollmaker is the nicest person on the whole Stage! He's just so busy taking care of the gravestones that he almost never gets the chance to leave. But Wolf brings me to play with him when she has to go on long hunts, so I still get to see him plenty! He always has the best toys to play with! I can't wait for him to meet Castwick! Do you think he can sew him a little hat like mine? (Little hat!)

Dear Witch, you must never believe the Dollmaker's words. Each one is a poison meant to ensnare you with his illusions and lies... A sort of spell all his own, meant to leave you a hollowed-out, miserable doll. We must be ever on our guard as we descend into his lair! Here now, be careful Mawnite, the stone stairs are slick. I don’t want you getting mixed in with the bones of the dead and getting lost to me.

Wolf, I can hear you muttering. Why are you even following us, beast? Go back to your forest.

Like hell I'm leaving Witch alone with you, Hero! As much as I'd love to be off hunting that four-legged fluffy friend of yours to bring her to the Narrator, I can't. Thanks to your blind obsession, Witch is in more danger than ever. I can't leave my grandson's side if he is to remain safe. There still has to be some way to mollify the Narrator and get Witch out of this mess you've put us all in... And if you think even for a moment I'm just going to let you drag Dollmaker into your scheme, then you really have let your brain leak out your ears.

Your concern is touching, old friend, but misguided. This encounter, like many things, is inevitable. I will admit I had hoped for more time before it came, but such as it is, I suppose. There is no point in trying to hide my orders: our Creator has bid me to tell you all a tale. It is one that I am sure you know well, Wolf. For reopening this wound I am sorry, so deeply sorry, but it is one that you have never allowed to truly heal.

This story will take three dolls to play its parts: the brave but ill-fated Hero and the beautiful but lonely Damsel, both of which I had have for a very long time now. But the third is a very special player, for the Narrator himself has given me the doll to play his part in our tale.

Years ago, our Stage was a different place, less weighed down by the grief that clouds so many hearts these days. The stories we told more varied, the Wolf's hunts less brutal. But that all changed by the actions of one player who chose to forgo his part.

It was natural for the Hero to fall in love with the Damsel in need of rescue, it was practically written to be so. Our Damsel was a passionate player, deserving the spotlight she stole every time she graced the stage. Beautiful, clever, witty, and kind; all too quickly the Damsel became the Narrator's favorite. Her days were spent practicing her lines perfectly in the tallest tower of the dark castle, waiting patiently for the Hero to come for her while keeping the Narrator company in the meanwhile.

If only the Hero had shared her patience... Perhaps the story might have turned out for the better. But he quickly grew jealous of the long hours she spent apart from him, of the difficult and draining stories it took for him to reach the castle. He began insisting that Damsel break from her role and leave the castle to be with him. And I, for the part I played in it, regret that I turned a blind eye to the times they met among the tombstones. Had I known now what the Hero's love would have turned into, I would have stopped it.

No longer did the Hero simply want to save our Damsel, he wanted to keep her as his and his alone. When Damsel realized his growing defiance, she refused to see him any longer, keeping only to their performances for the sake of the Narrative we all must upkeep. Maybe this was what finally drove the fallen Hero to such desperate acts. He stormed the castle in the peaceful hours between plays, planning to take Damsel for himself and drag them both Offstage if he must.

But this was something that Narrator could not abide by. Such a fate could not befall his beloved Damsel. So while it pained him to take such a dire action against one of our own, the Narrator stood against Hero's selfish demands. Damsel was admired by all on the Stage; she belonged to no one man. It wasn't right for her to be torn from her place in the story, to never again see her beloved family. With a heavy heart, the Narrator struck a blow at Hero to silence him forever.

But in her heart, Damsel couldn't bear to see her people turn on each other, all in her name.

Hero's love for her had come out of her own actions, her own words, her own love. She blamed herself for all that had transpired. So rather than let the final scene play out as the Narrator wished, she sacrificed herself before Hero to save him. Her final plea was that he live on without her, striving to do better in her name, to protect all the players that need the show to go on.

Stories have power, and no power is greater than that of a sacrifice. Damsel's story came true, turning the hero's blood black as ink to fuel the stories he'd now be bound to fulfill. But grief is a heavy thing. Hero could not accept the death of the object of his affection, and the Narrator could not accept the loss of his Damsel so easily. Hero had caused too much damage that day. Too many performances ruined, so many scripts to rewrite. The Narrator could not chance such a disaster happening again. But he could not just be rid of Hero, not after the price Damsel had paid to keep him save.

To prevent the tragedy from ever happening again... certain defenses had to be put in place. Now, no matter how many times he may die... the Hero always gets back up again. An unstoppable revenant to stalk the Stage. The Narrator cursed the Hero to forget his memories again with every death, starting anew from the same point in the story, in the hopes that it would be enough to stave off his reckless abandonment of the role he must fill. This was the only way the Narrator knew to keep Damsel's final wish in play while keeping everyone onstage safe.

But it appears that what we hoped for... was not enough. The Narrator bought us time, but Hero's meddling once again threatens everything we hold dear. Dear Wolf, sweet Witch, please heed the lessons of this tale well. Know the effects your choices will make.

What kind of nonsense is this? Who would... who would even believe such baseless lies?! I WOULD NEVER DO SUCH A THING! I don't even know who you are talking about! I've NEVER been to the castle! I can't get in! There isn’t even anyone named Damsel on the stage! Am I really to believe I'd just FORGET something like that?! T-that's ridiculous! Even for the Narrator's schemes! This... I... W-why can't I stop crying?! N-no, not you too, Witch? D-don't listen to him! It's a curse! WHAT DID YOU DO TO US?!

Grief is something we cannot out run. Eventually it always catches back up to us. Sadness is not evil, it is a part of us, and we must accept that. Wolf, I think it would be best if you took Witch home and sent Hero back to his camp. They need some time with their thoughts. I know, I know you are angry with me. I know you never wanted Witch to hear this story. But it was commanded by the Creator; it seemed unwise to test his temper any further. Go, be with your family, share in each other's tears. Maybe it is time that Witch heard your story, Wolf...

My door is always open, however, if any of you desire to speak to me again. While I cannot take your pain away, I may be able to help you make sense of your grief. Everyone mourns differently.
