It's a special item, linked to filling the lab experiment bar! TL;DR: When you donate items, they stay there for 24 hours. If people don't take them, they get used for experiments and fill the bar. When the bar reaches full, we get a free item for 24 hours that we can grab as many of as we want. Right now, there's the event going on, so the items so far are all broken technology from the Tatters linked to the current event. They don't do anything, but they can have lore implications or stuff like that.

Every time the lab bar fills up, a New Item is released! They're free to take as many as you want for a limited time, and they only appear in the lab for the 24 hours that they're available. Some of them have later been available to purchase as premium packages (for example, the lab coat/boots/gloves set were all Lab Items like this), and sometimes they're specific to an event (like the Scanner, Pamphlet, and Sonar from previous events that no longer do anything). In this event so far, the [item]Broken Hard Drive[/item], the [item]Half Holoscreen[/item], and the [item]Cracked Screen[/item] have all been released in the Lab from filling up the bar just like the Card Reader. We don't know what they do yet, or if they do anything! They seem to be mysterious technology from the remnant that Lycus is in the process of discovering, so we're all waiting to learn more!
