Since I have never entered a contest or anything, how do you participate and submit your entry?

Whenever a new contest is announced, there will be a link to the Contest Rules, which will be updated with the details & dates for the most recent contest!
Lately, contests are hosted by an NPC who picks two categories (like "art" or "writing" or "avatar" or "crafts") and those are the two categories you can enter for that month! So if one month has "art" and "galleries" as their categories, and you have some writing you want to enter, you would need to wait for another contest that has "writing" as one of its categories for that month.
In order to enter, you wait until the announcement that the contest has Officially Started, go to the sub-forum (see the list at the top of this forum section) for the contest you're going to be entering, and create a new thread in the appropriate category for your entry. Read through the rules for specifics, but if you need visual examples of formatting it might help to look at other entries in the section you're thinking of entering!
Right now, you can look at the "avatar" sub forum and the "gallery" sub forum to see the entries folks have created for this month's contest if you want examples!
And even if you don't enter anything in the contest, you can still vote for your favourite! The winner is decided by which thread gets the most cheers, so you can go through and cheer for all your favourite entries whether you've entered or not!
