Finding items?

I can't seem to see a search bar for finding items for quests. I need Carbonated Milk. I was able to find gloves in the marketplace for another quest but since I can't find Carbonated Milk I'm wondering if I can search for it instead. Is user shops a thing here?

A search bar like you described does exist, although it's a little hidden. If you go to your wishlist, there'll be a bar you can type into in order to add items to it. The search results that pop up will also tell you who sells the item, along with what rarity it is! (Each shop stocks a set number of each rarity: you can learn more by clicking the gray tutorial button on a shop page.)
In this case, carbonated milk is sold by Piper at the Arcade. Note that some shops are broken into multiple tabs: Piper has separate tabs for toys and for food, so be sure you're looking in the right one!
User shops aren't a thing, but in addition to the Marketplace, you can post on the Marketplace forum and see if anyone there is selling. You can also have your Kith buy the item for you - more about how to do that here.
Oh, and don't be afraid to add items to the aforementioned wishlist - people are quite generous here. More about that here!
