October Event: A Suspect Meeting

[Catch up on the Event so far]

Thanks for meeting me back here, all of you. I know sneaking in through the service entrance probably wasn't what you expected, but there's a lot going on. Eh, we don't have time to mince words any more, so I'm going to leave the dancing to the people in the ballroom and get straight to the point:

There may be a secret plot to overthrow Princess Celariel during this Illuminary Gala.

Not a word to anyone! Only Lenta, the Princess, and I know about this, and frankly, we hoped to keep you all safe by keeping it that way. But with the Gala about to start in earnest, our responsibilities have us tied so tight we can barely breathe. Blast! We've made little headway and we're under more scrutiny than ever, so I hate to say it, but we need your help to uncover the truth.

I'll explain as we go. Follow me to the balcony above the Throne Room, but keep your voices down - Her Highness has company...

...is utterly unacceptable. The magical decorations of this Gala... are nothing like the spells we have used for centuries. How galling. Never before have we needed... to redirect water magic for the purpose of hosting... Merfolk? I am appalled. Already we can see... whose comforts are your highest priority.

How... could you do this to us, Your Highness? I had hoped that you would not be foolish enough... to follow in your mother's footsteps... with regards to these Galas. You, of all people... should seek the old ways! If you are too young... to see it, please, heed those of us who remember... times before such strife and sorrow. Elders have wisdom from experience. That infantile Dryad who you have allowed to oversee the festivities... is clearly too preoccupied with this... this irresponsible new Rejuvenation Ritual. It is not to be borne. The Galas of old would never... have been so politically misused.

And why did I not… receive a direct invitation? I was told... that all your foreign guests did. Does the throne now intend... to deliberately shun me? On top of everything else...

(You see that Dryad down there, with the long leaves? That's Mara, a Dryad from a willow tree at the edge of the Enchanted Forest. They're usually too reclusive to show up at Court, ever since they were disgraced at the last Illuminary Gala. I can't say I'm thrilled that they've decided to make an exception now, of all times.)

WHAT! Your Highness, you sent those foreigners ACTUAL INVITATIONS? If you need a flimsy leaf of paper to be told when to show up, you're not worthy of getting past the gates!

We shouldn't be fussing over these invaders disguised as tourists, we should be rallying our troops to be hyper-vigilant about the strange new behavior of the Withering. All this foreign talk of Tailoring keeping the destruction at bay... PREPOSTEROUS. Mark my words, just because the Withering seems to be retreating doesn't mean a thing!

Don't forget, those other Remnants brought down that Everstorm disaster on your loyal Forest citizens. I don't care if it was through their malice or their stupidity - I say we throw out the lot of them, and I say we do it NOW!

(That old, scarred Avoreal? General Faulkner Thelvoskye, captain of the Royal Guard and the most vocal of the Enchanted Forest's isolationists. Listen, tadpoles... when you're hunting around, don't get on his bad side. Trust me. Thelvoskye has been itching to declare another state of emergency - no surprise there. During the Everstorm crisis, he gained so much clout that only Princess Celariel herself had more political power.)

That's our Princess, always so open and trusting. Now, General, I'm sure she couldn't have anticipated all this fuss about her invitations! Such a shame, that my one little comment about them caused such a stir. Dreadful misunderstanding.

And really, this'll be fun! New friendships to forge, solemn traditions to flout, et cetera, et cetera. Exquisite. Don't worry, Celly, I'm sure these foreigners'll adore the Gala. And it must be so relaxing for you, knowing that they'll be charmingly ignorant of the ways of our Court! After all, they surely won't notice any of the little mismanaged details.

(That pale elf with the Moonstone Inspired Hair is Dynrial Twiningvine, a distant cousin who's twisted himself into the line of succession. He's always smirking at the center of Court gossip, but every time there's a scandal, the smug miscreant saunters away scot-free. I don't know how he grew from one of Celariel's childhood playmates into such a petty troublemaker, but she rarely has warm words to say about her kinsman.)

Enough!... has been said, and your concerns have been heard.
I must speak with my Council, but please, rest assured
That all of your worries we shall seek to quell.
I wish you the best, and I bid you farewell.

At last, we're alone.

Students of Hope, I thank you for your discretion.
Alas, you have just witnessed a typical Court session.
But I fear one of those Suspects seeks more than just strife
And plans to steal my throne, or nay, to end my life.

In Court machinations you have never been embroiled,
And in our former times of need, you've aided, even toiled,
so I ask that you investigate, and tell me what you hear -
Whether you suspect one of them, or think I need not fear.

Welcome to October's Illuminary Gala Event! Head over to the Event Page to complete special Quests. Be warned: the community's choices during each chapter will influence how the story unfolds...

This is a Competitive Event, so you'll cause exactly what happens in each new chapter by filling up one of the bars of the four Event NPCs: Princess Celariel, Mara, General Thelvoskye, or Dynrial. Over the course of the month, you'll have multiple opportunities to investigate the three suspects and change your mind about your suspicions - but at the end of the Event, you'll get to decide once and for all if you want to Accuse Mara, Accuse General Thelvoskye, Accuse Dynrial, or Reassure Celariel!

If you have any more questions about how Events work, feel free to check out this guide to the Event System.

Have fun…

Edit: There was a slight technical error at launch! Sorry!
