January Update: Meeting of the Minds

Tatters Investigation Group Project Log 17B. Researcher Elliot Grant, re-initializing team conference call between Researchers Lycus Artois, Piper Artois, Marcus Smith, Lenta Birch Tree, and Scribe "None of Your Damn Business." Gee, it's so sunny to work with a bunch of professionals again...

*koff*... *hchh*...

Anyway, I'm resuming this transmission from where we left off in Project Log 17A, since somebody wouldn't stop insisting that "the whole crew needs a hearty mess o' meals and a swig o' water." Is everyone refreshed now? All relaxed and sunny about our impending doom? Because I've been crunching numbers during our break, and guess what? We're running out of time.

Even though none of the other Remnants are recording any anomalies in our own sectors of the Black Hole, the rate at which this phenomenon has been expanding around Hope shows an acceleration of nearly 34%. There are still "safe" points of entry in and out of the Remnant that avoid the crisis area, but if we keep dithering around like a bunch of indecisive Crust idealists looking for the perfect scenario, we're going to lose our window of opportunity!

Lycus, I've told you what we have to do! We can't waste any more time trying to interface my tech with that so-called "magic" that your radiant tree friend uses - it's not working! If we're going to diffuse this excess energy, we've got to do it from within, and we've only got one shot. I'll... *hchh*.... look, I can drive my shuttle into the thick of it, handle it myself. It doesn't matter if I-

Greenman preserve my last fading blossom of patience! For the final time, this is not- Lycus, please inform your collaborator that his methodology remains out of the question. I understand that our time is limited. However, the probable ramifications- that is to say, given our evidence of the potential consequences, it is much wiser to move with extreme caution.

However, I do concur that we no longer have the luxury of continuing to gather additional information from across the Remnants. As fascinating as it has been to read the clues that Marcus and the Scribe have been accumulating for us on the subject of the initial safeguards that the different Remnants used to stave off the Withering, without a direct correlation to the problem at hand, it remains speculative information, albeit in itself a promising new field of study... But I digress.

It is true that I... I have repeatedly failed in all of my attempts to incorporate my spellwork into this Solarium technology that Elliot uses with distressing frequency. Now that Princess Celariel and I no longer have access to the potent- I mean to say, now that my magic is free from the influence of the Narrator's corrupted Ritual, it is evident that my own skills are inadequate. Her Highness is still pursuing the study of ritual magic through her connection to the Heart of the Forest, but its ancient secrets are time-consuming to peruse safely. Elliot is correct when he says that we must admit- that it is time that we accept that this search is a dead end, and that a solitary intervention is the most viable course of action.

That being said, we should not- we must not- no, I speak for Her Highness in this regard- we absolutely cannot entrust such a recently-developed ritual to a single man none of us in the Forest have actually met! Particularly given that the spellcaster in question was unable to demonstrate- I apologize to offer insult, but I feel that I must express my concerns. If the initial use of Elliot's "machinery" was not enough to keep even one individual from harm, I have grave misgivings about his new theoretical expansion to the spell having any ability to protect the entire community without ill effect.

Lycus, please, you must understand by now- we are deeply appreciative of all that our friends from afar have contributed, of everything you've all done to help the Enchanted Forest, but when it comes to the Withering, we are born to live and die for our land. The Enchanted Forest has countless protective magics that have been used against the Withering- More than that, it is the very foundation of Dryad magic. I should the one who enters the afflicted area, to cast this new ritual spell around Hope before I am... before the Withering seizes me, and...

UGH, enough blabbering about who gets to die first! This isn't nearly as entertaining as RATS! makes it sound. I haven't had enough caffeine potions to deal with you two hashing out the same argument that we've been having all week - seriously, is nobody paying attention to their past scripts?

Besides, it's way too early in the draft to stop researching - the Giant and I keep finding some seriously juicy snippets of lore! Don't you know that nothing works out 'til the last minute anyway? Like, doom has a pretty predictable schedule. We've been cross-compiling all of the scraps of information that we can find about everything from the Narrator to the Everstorm... And there's definitely something going on.

Like, some of these early drafts from our most traditional plays on the Stage have a really similar running motif to these ancient Shimmerscale Warrior ballads from the Reef - they’re all about fighting destruction with destruction! We're onto a potential plot twist here, and I'm not going to let it get ruined by the Birch Tree and the Cursed because they won't stop being a pair of self-sacrificing idiots. BOTH OF YOU NEED TO STOP VOLUNTEERING TO GO DIE HEROICALLY OFFSTAGE!

-BECAUSE THAT WOULD COMPLETELY DIMINISH THE EMOTIONAL IMPACT! Timing is everything. Obviously, when the audience finally gets their long-foreshadowed tragic death scene, it's gotta be center stage! C'mon, Hero's got this part nailed down, so if anyone else wants to take the spotlight, you've GOT to learn how this goes.

Maybe we can get it right with some dramatic irony thrown in, but that's a tall order for side characters that haven't finished their arcs - like, we'd have to think that you've totally learned your lesson, and you finally understand how much everyone cares about you, and you're like, on the cusp of some amazing magical breakthrough or heartfelt confession or whatever, and you're just about to finally get everything that you ever wanted, and then SUDDENLY, we realize that your past actions have caught up to you, and you barely have time to choke out a final farewell as the people who love you cry out in horror -

N-NOPE, NO, NEVERMIND, EVERYBODY S-STOP LISTENING TO SCRIBE!

U-um, u-uh, u-um... Piper! Time to pay attention to Piper!

Report in, Researcher Artois! Er, the other one besides me. How's it going with the code that you've been working on? Any progress? P-please... please let there be any progress...

I dunno, bro, this stuff makes me want to tear my hair out. You know I'm no good with deadlines, and this one has an emphasis on the dead part!

Even though Rigby said that Glitchsweeper was helpful, this is a whole 'nother level! The coding languages they use on the Solarium are way more complicated than anything I use to program my games, and all these books about ritual Forest magic are thicker than the most boring history textbooks I have to read for class, and.... argh! I know I was supposed to be focusing, but...

But I just can't concentrate! Everything was taking sooooo long, and there was just so much stuff to go through, so... I just ended up spending all my time programming shortcuts for myself, so that I could sort though all the info quicker! I'm sorry! I'm not a big brainiac like you guys! It takes me forever to read all this mumbo-jumbo even before I gotta figure out what things like "enhanced causality algorithm tracking mode" and "innate sensory charm casters" mean...

But I did find one cool thing at least? If you run some of Elliot's algorithms through enough simulations, it starts to churn out repeating variables, which you can plug in to categorize the different types of patterns that show up in Lenta's rituals... 'Cause, look here, they both map their outputs in the same way...

But... I mean, it's probably nothing. I was just looking for shortcuts and being lazy again. I'll do it the long way next time -

No, wait, send me that code again- Damn, kid, don't wreck yourself so much. Your code may be cluttered, but this is some decent hacking! You're not wrong, you're just thinking too small. If you take this function you wrote, and instead of just using it to sort the info, you actually start running code through those rituals that Treetop was going on about... Gimme a sec... YES!

What was that thing you said, Scribe? "Destruction fights destruction?" Huh, okay... so maybe if we write some code that replicates the stable levels of energy flow that encircle this "Heart of the Forest" database, but carefully modify the input to harness the energy output of the Tatters themselves -

- then we'd be able to - yes, I believe that we could create a similar cycle with the destructive energy, curling it in on itself to generate a magical, protective Veil of sorts, similar to the one that surrounds the Heart! It should be capable of containing the specific, dangerous area of the Tatters -

- like the eye of a storm! YES! We'd c-cut off the chain reaction, and dampen the energy levels so that any anomalies within couldn't harm the rest of the town! MWAHAHAHA!

But as for the energy within that area... My calculations show that we would need a c-consistent, sustained effort to incrementally lower its potency. Even with protections locking it away, it feels like leaving it as-is would just result in d-disaster.

Yeah, you can't just slap on a "keep away" sign and expect people to listen to it. Trust me. Sooner or later, some moron with big ideas is going to get cocky, decide to try their luck, and... Bye.

But bleeding off some of its power... Yeah. Yeah, if I built a modified version of the machinery that I use, with a massively diminished rate of conversion... Using this foundational code to combine my work with Treetop's protective tech from the Forest, I could maybe make a version that has enough safety mechanisms built in that I'd be willing to share those blueprints. I mean, with modifications like that, it could barely eke out the slightest amount of materials, compared to the stuff I work with - but hell, it's not like your Remnant is facing the kinds of resource shortages that would require you to do these conversions at-scale, so...

Yeah. This... This could work! But... *koff*.... *hchh*.... *koff*...

Lycus, even if we can find a way to do this at very low, very contained levels, with no risk of tearing anyone apart or blowing up your town - which is a big if, mind you, there are still a ton of numbers we need to run -

Point is, even if we can find a way to do this, letting people interact with the Black Hole directly... There's no way to fully escape consequences when you're dealing with something that unmakes reality.

We can protect your community, and make sure that nobody is going to get Tattered, but on a personal level, there's always going to be some kind of cost for the people who choose to do this. Whoever volunteers is still putting themselves at risk.

Life doesn't ever give you anything for free...
