Before Kit could answer, Jorik picked up a pebble and rose to a crouch. His view was still hazy, but he could have sworn that something--or someone--had moved behind a large rock nearby. Probably nothing but a shift of the fog, but Jorik was so sick of the endless mist and the way it confused his senses that he wanted to be sure.

“You, there!” he shouted, hurling the pebble in its direction. “Show yourself!” For good measure, Jorik threw two more stones. His aim was a little off from exhaustion and lack of proper food, and the stones clattered uselessly off the face of the boulder.

Screaming and throwing rocks at shapes in the fog. Good to know his sanity was still intact.

(Never mind that even if someone was out there, Jorik had nowhere to run if they decided to attack. Not to mention that if they were Kit’s friend, then he had likely jeopardized his only way out of the fog…)

Star jumped as someone beyond the rock shouted and threw things. This is less than ideal, she thought. Drawing an arrow, she kept her bow lowered as she walked out from behind the rock slowly, ready to run should she need to. "Should I consider you friend or foe?" she called, noticing a not only a human, but also some other Fae standing next to him.

    "Ah..."

Jorik flinched at the newcomer's approach; he hadn't really expected anyone to appear. He might have hidden behind Kit, except that she was too little to offer much cover.

In his surprise, Jorik didn't realize at first that the girl with the bow wasn't riding a horse, but rather was horse. Where her mount's head should have been, Jorik saw only... her.

He must be seeing things--unless somehow this... horse-girl? was one of the taller isle-folk his companion had mentioned.

"I'm no foal," Jorik said, having misheard her words as his mind tried to make sense of girl tall hoof horse arrows--! "Does that make me a friend?"

Star relaxed a bit, carefully unstringing her arrow. This human didn't seem to want to cause any harm, and the other Fae hadn't moved. She put her bow and arrow away, still ready to bolt if they attacked. She asked him, "Why are you here? This island is not kind to humans."

Jorik’s eyes glinted. As he had with Kit, he swooped into a bow, albeit a more formal one.

“Not a fortnight ago, I set sail from the kingdom of Ersuma on the grandest of Her Majesty’s ships,” he said, affecting the most gallant manner he could manage. “Sadly, the ship was overturned in a terrible storm, and the rest of the crew lost at sea. By a happy twist of fate, I found myself washed upon this shore.”

He tried to wipe some of the grime off his sleeves but succeeded only in smearing it further before continuing, “Though I look to be in a poor state now, I am in fact one of Ersuma’s most esteemed explorators.” Was that even a proper word?

“If I may ask, miss, who might you be? And what is there to hunt”--he nodded at her bow and arrows--“aside from all of these rocks?”

Star hesitated. She had noticed that he didn't actually say his name while he was introducing himself, so she was reluctant to give him hers. What if he was some sort of magician, sent to enslave the Fae? It was highly unlikely, considering that no human had ever gone back to their homeland to report the existence of the Fae, but it was still possible. Needing to say something to avoid being rude, she said, "Call me...Swift." She had just made that nickname up on the spot, and was quite proud of how regal it sounded. "And while the landscape looks empty, there are many creatures who would prey upon a lone centaur galloping on the shore. I would advise you to also find a weapon better than thrown rocks." She really hoped he did have something other than rocks picked up off the ground.

“Of course,” Jorik said. “Rocks are crude things. Rest assured, my weapon of choice is far more refined.” Not strictly true, unless you counted irresistible charm as "refined." (If only he were as charming as he believed himself to be.)

“My apologies for disturbing you and for the lack of a proper introduction. I am called Ballad, and Kit is my companion. We seek only a path out of this fog. It does take a toll on the nerves after a while.”

Star tapped her hoof on the ground as she thought. She could bring these travelers out of the fog, but she really didn't want to endanger her herd in any way. Speaking of the herd, she needed to get back to them, and tell Windstorm about this development. Deciding suddenly, she said, "I can show you a place to get out of the fog. It's not too far from here." Yes, that was a good idea; leave Ballad and Kit in the caves which she had discovered to get out to the coast, then go back to the herd and tell Windstorm about them.

((Windstorm is the lead mare that I totally didn't just make up a few seconds ago, by the way.))

Jorik nodded and gestured for Swift to lead. "After you, miss."

He tried not to giggle. Girls with cat eyes and horse legs. The next person he met would probably have rabbit ears and a fluffy tail. The fog might be fraying his wits, but at least it was making things interesting.

"How do you all know where to go?" he asked. "With no view of the stars, I've been hopelessly lost since I arrived."

(Despite knowing only one constellation, Jorik had always enjoyed listening to traders' tales of navigating overseas by starlight. It seemed appropriate.)

"Hm? Well, I don't know about your friend over there, but I'm just retracing my steps from when I first explored this place. It's nothing special." After a moment, she found her scent trail in the fog, and began walking back towards the cave network, making sure not to lose Ballad on the way.
