Oh yes, I definitely think it wouldn't work as well as a film.
Some of the things they did with lighting were incredible.
I still haven't read the script, but I'm really really hoping they release a live recording, because I imagine just reading it would kind of... put you off? Most of the negative reviews are from people just reading the script, which wasn't the intended medium.

I would love to see a live recording... I've heard so often that it's much better when you get to actually see the play instead of only reading it.

I skimmed it while I was waiting on my husband in Wal-mart. It looked pretty good, though I admit the script format was less interesting to me than a full-length book would have been. I almost wish Voldemort's daughter wouldn't have been the antagonist, though. Just because Voldemort was evil doesn't mean his daughter had to be.

*goes into garage and gets a hose* I don't want to live on this planet anymore--
Okay, but in all seriousness, did they hire a 14-year old to write this? :( George Lucas gets away with this because his work is almost a parody of everything else in the genre at this point, writ large. But this is not a good thing....

Honestly, Harry Potter has always been close to a lot of tropes and cliches.
Voldemort's daughter actually in many ways seems more believable to me in than the character of Sirius Black.
What new entries into the Harry Potter franchise tend to reveal with both this one and book 7, is that a lot of people seem to look at the first books with very strong nostalgia glasses.

Gwennafran I love how positive you are towards the Cursed Child, it's so so nice compared so some of the reviews I've seen. ♥♥

@Winter
I'm not saying it's the best thing ever. I liked it for what it is, but I'm not saying it's a master piece. :)
I do think it has a lot of fan service. Which isn't far off how others feel it has a lot of "fan fiction elements" (fan fiction basically IS fan service). But a play made 10 years after the fact *should* deliver fan service. The people that pay lots of money to see this play expects to get that fan service!
Also, I honestly like TCC better plot wise than I did book 7 when I read that the first time (first half was very long). Last half of book 7 was a better read for me, but looking solely at plot, this one entertained me more.
Thing is, though, I remember when book 7 came out, and how people reacted on that. I was in my mid twenties back then, so I was past my childhood and teen years when that happened.
I remember how over the top negative everyone was.
Fans were furious. And everyone complained how it felt like fan fiction, how disappointed they were, and how some of the fake book 7's they had read actually were better than the canon one.
However, now people has had some 10 years to get used to book 7. Now it's part of the series and "best thing ever", but this new thing... How dare they, right? Messing with Harry Potter like that.
I'm not saying the play book is the best thing ever. And I definitively get why it's a hard read for many. But it doesn't deserve the extreme negative reactions it get from a lot of fans.
