I've had good success with older Grimm and Perault fairy tales in the past, but maybe Scandinavian would be good.

Let us know if you find some good ones. Being from Denmark I feel woefully badly read, when the only ones I can think of are those by H. C. Andersen, but they are not exactly folk tales.
