What are your favorite genres?

by CloudedOtter » December 30, 2016 03:55 AM

^Exactly as the question asks.

I'll typically read anything if it catches my interest, the most extreme case being a Christian sci-fi novel that I idly picked up while at the library. (For the record, I am not Christian. :P) But I've traditionally read fantasy but mostly read non-fiction these days. Wonder how that happened.

This is an interesting question. I will always say that fantasy is my favourite genre with a very broad definition of what qualifies as fantasy. However, when I go through the Stuff I Have Read there is an uncomfortable large amount of mostly mediocre romance. I hope this is mainly due to the fact that they are quick to read and give me the feeling of finishing things.

I also try to challange myself to read outside my comfort zone but this is hard because 1) I tend to gravitate towards what I like and know works and 2) I have no idea where to start or what to expect.

Alternate time-lines/Alternate-universes/historical fiction
Sci-fi
Fantasy
retold/fractured fairy-tales
mysteries
urban fantasy
travel journals (but must be over 150 years old)
biographies
graphic novels in the above genres
young adult
romance, but only when incorporating humor in some fashion
adventure stories

Yeah, that's mostly what I read. I mean, textbooks too but that's reference and not a genre, you know? Although looking at my shelves I might have a slight issue with collecting gorgeous field guides.

Judging by that list you could be reading almost any book, Sefria :).

My shelves are really a mix of a lot of things. I even have a lot of series that don't match because I have bought some used. Those that do match are mostly because there never was more than one cover for them.

Nah, there are whole genres I won't touch. True crime and horror, for instance; they tend to promote a state of mind I find HIGHLY uncomfortable to sustain so nope on them.
Most religious books I'll pass, unless reading them with someone else for the purposes of discussion.
Thrillers I won't pick up on my own but will with a recommendation.
Straight-up history books I find either frustrating or depressing, on the whole, so again -will read with recommendation only.
Books on sports stuff, nope.
Very young children's books, only if the illustrations are lovely, they were recommended, or for purposes of actually reading to very young children.
Westerns, only on recommendation.
Noir crime, only on recommendation.

There's a bunch that aren't on that list!

Lol, matching series stuff... that's hard. I've never even bothered to try for most of those. Like the Shakespeare collection? There are... looks like three that match. Three plays that match bindings, out of a whole shelf.
Hm, looks like I have most of a complete set of matching Happy Hollisters, though? Although those were a gift when I was young (yes I'm old) so that was someone else's efforts.

I don't have many matching series. But speaking of ones I do have... I brought home my favourite books from home home to uni home. Those would be my set of the Chronicles of Narnia and my copy of Watership Down.

The copy of Watership is super tatty and old - I got it as a gift over 10 years ago and I've loved it to pieces. In fact, I think I got it to replace my original copy of Watership, since that one was read so often it fell apart. :'D

Anyway, the set of Narnia books are on my little shelf in my room. It's nice to have a matching set. <3

I'm mostly into fantasy, with crime/detective storys at a solid second.

Ohh, I also have a boxed set of The Borrowers, so that matches too.
Speaking of childhood favorites and books you read so much they started to fall apart and needed replacing.

I'll read mostly anything (barring romance and I'd need a lot of convincing before picking up a fantasy), but stories with sci- fi elements and long, dry tomes about socioeconomics are the most common thing on my bookshelf.

Herbivore, have you read "The Forest People"? Kind of a social anthropology book, an older one so sometimes I see it showing up really cheap at used book stores. Interesting book, if you're into that sort of stuff!

@Sefria
No I haven't. That sounds super interesting! I'll add it to my already giant book store order.
I really should read more anthropology. It's fascinating stuff. Thanks for the rec c:
