Growing Out an Undercut

Anyone have any suggestions with this?
I was a dingo before my senior year of college and shaved off a third of my hair because someone told me I wouldn't. Working on growing it back (painfully slow) and wondering if anyone who has ever been there before has any tips.
I'd really rather not cut it all short because I LOVEEE my long hair, and have accepted that I will look goofy for quite some time. It's just the perfect length for massive cowlick-y bedhead and I've got no idea.

For a little more context, it had been in the back of my mind for a while.
Then me and my friends were all on vacation in July and one was giving himself a haircut. I jokingly asked if he'd give me an undercut. My best friend said something along the lines of 'you absolutely will not do that. I forbid you.'
So then I had him do it and she was not very happy. O:-)
....I might be a little bit of an instigator.

Depends on the shape of the head and the location of the 'third' by your metric. As soon as you can get it up into the ponytail, it will start to look much better. Until then, you can keep your hair down, or smooth the loose stuff up into the motion of the ponytail with gel, and be patient about it. If you've got long, long hair, it's going to be a struggle, I expect...

I wish I had the self-confidence to get an undercut. I've always wanted one, but my hair's so long I always worry about what growing it back would be like... QaQ

Are hats, bandannas, etc. an option you can use every day? They could be a good quick-fix on days that your hair is bugging you.

I have nothing to add because my reaction to all of this is most definitely 'Just shave the rest."
Right now my hair looks really weird too though, since I've decided to grow the top part of my undercut out. It's actually rather close to what my avatar on here has right now, but I'm hopping to get it long enough to be tied back...

@Himochi I'll be sure to let you know how painful it is. The last time I got it trimmed down was August I believe, so we're going on 4 months and I've got probably two inches. Rest on my hair goes past my shoulders.
Luckily my corporate environment doesn't care what I look like, so I have that going for me.
