Game Guide: This Little Pig (Updated 7/25/17)

If you enjoy Snake-type games, you'll love This Little Pig. This game has a few features that you may have encountered in other Snake games, but the overall combination feels pretty unique, so don't be discouraged if it takes you a bit of time to get the hang of it!

This Little Pig has two goals: Stay alive, and get points. The tricky thing about this game is that these two goals don't always align, so watch out for that...

Earning Points

Here are all the ways your pig can score points:

Red Apples (2 points)
Gold Apples (5 points)
Sprouts (2 points)
Watering Cans (5 points)
Lawnmowers (5 points - only possible when wet)

Special effects:

- Eating an Apple of any sort will make your piggy's vine-tail a little bit longer.
- Eating a Sprout will make the vine a bit shorter (Sprouts have no special effect if your pig doesn't have a tail).
- Eating a Watering Can will make your piggy "invincible" for 10 seconds (you'll still die if you touch the border of the game, but lawnmowers and your own tail won't kill you). Picking up a new Watering Can while an old one is still in effect simply adds 10 seconds to the invincibility timer.

At time of writing, these point values were the same across all difficulty levels.

Staying Alive

There are three ways to die in This Little Pig:

- Hit a lawnmower.
- Hit your own tail.
- Hit the edge of the game.

As noted above, eating a Watering Can will make you immune to the first two sources of death. When you hit a Watering Can, your pig will become covered in small water droplets. So long as the droplets are there, your pig is protected.

The water droplets will start to fade over the last couple seconds of protection. It's a subtle cue, so keep a close eye out to avoid an untimely demise!

If you need a break, hit 'spacebar' to pause. This is handy for anything from "There's a spider on my foot" to "It's time for dinner."

Difficulty Levels

There are three difficulty levels: Easy, Medium, and Hard. Point values are the same across all three difficulty levels - the only obvious difference is that your pig will move much faster on higher difficulties.

Control Options

You can choose between mouse controls or keyboard controls (I don't know how the game works if you're on Moble, sorry!). This isn't a formal choice - the game will respond to whichever controls you use, and will even let you change between the two control methods mid-game.

Mouse: Your pig's direction will be determined by your mouse.

- If 'Mouse Click' is on, your pig will run in a straight line until you click, at which point, it will turn towards wherever you click. A quick click might result in the pig only turning partway towards your mouse, while holding the mouse button down will cause the pig to constantly adjust course to follow your cursor.

- If 'Mouse Click' is off, your pig will chase your cursor wherever it may be. Leaving the cursor stationary will either cause the pig to run in a tiny circle around your cursor, or abandon you and rocket off in a straight line. You've been warned.

Keyboard: Your pig's direction will be determined by the arrow keys.

- If you want to use the keyboard, TURN ON 'Mouse Click' or you're going to be frustrated.

- This mode is currently "unsupported", meaning that bugs are expected and will likely not be fixed. This is due to incompatibilities between keyboard and Mobile control schemes.

- The keyboard controls are now traditional Snake controls.

- Specifically, pressing an arrow key causes your pig to turn to face that direction, unless you press the key opposite the direction your pig is currently facing. (For example, if your pig is headed left, pressing up or down will cause your pig to face up or down, but pressing right will have no effect.)

- If you pull too quick a U-turn, your pig will smack into its own tail. Avoid that! (For example, if your pig is headed up and you press right and then down in quick succession, your pig will spin 180 degrees and lose the game.)

Tips

Now that you know the basics, it's time to learn how to maximize your score!

- Keep a countdown of how much Watering Can invincibility time is left. This can get tricky if you stack too many Cans (I've had over 5 solid minutes of invincibility before), but knowing whether it's safe to hit your own tail or attack a lawnmower can be invaluable.

- Don't eat every Apple you see! A longer tail cuts down on your maneuvering options, which increases the chances you'll make a mistake or get trapped. I like to keep my tail fairly short (10-20 Apples long). When my tail starts getting out of hand, I'll take a break from Red Apples until I've collected some Sprouts.

- Don't waste Sprouts! If you've eaten so many Sprouts that your piggy no longer has a tail, eating additional Sprouts won't make your tail go negative - the next Apple you eat will still cause a bit of vine to appear. Instead of overdosing on Sprouts, eat some Apples first.

- If something's too close to the edge, just ignore it. There are a lot of ways to get points, so it's usually not worth the risk. "Too close" will depend on how comfortable you are with the controls and how reliable your mouse/keyboard is.

- You have a turning radius! If you really need to grab something close to an edge, remember that you can't turn on a dime. It's better to turn too early and take a few tries to grab the item than to turn too late and smack into the wall.

- My item priorities, in order: Watering Cans, Lawnmowers (when invincible), Golden Apples, Sprouts, Red Apples. (So, if I have to choose between, say, getting 10 points from a Lawnmower and getting another 10 seconds of invincibility from a Watering Can, I'll usually go for the Can.)

I hope you found this guide helpful! Good luck getting a high score :) If you have any questions or would like some screenshots, let me know and I'll see what I can do!

Thank you for the guide! I didn’t know about invincibility stacking up, I’ll have to try that next time I play.
