"Gee, you sound devastated about it," Lycus muttered. "Get off my counter, Piper, I'm trying to do some work." "It's fine, I've got my safety goggles." Piper put her hands in circles over her eyes. "Hey everyone, I'm Lycus and I live in my dark lab cave all day and try to science myself up some cereal, but I haven't quite figured it out yet so I keep on buyin' it myself and burnin' up wigs 'till sundown. Ho ho ho, science science science." "That doesn't even make sense." "Yeah it does." "No, it really doesn't." "I don't expect you to get it. It's a joke, and your humor organs were born funky. They don't work right. You only laugh at chemistry jokes." "I'll get it if you explain it to me." "I'm not going to explain my art, Lycus. Hey, listen, I really feel like these make me see better, like they're magic glasses or something. Can your science explain [i]that, [/i]brother?" "Confirmation bias," he said, and pushed her off the table. His life shifted ever so slightly on its axis. Not because it was Kei, really, but just because it was an anchor. He didn't see his week in the stress lines on his father's face and the curling forward march of the tatters, both vicious motivators to work harder and longer; he saw a momentary glimmer of something more normal. Students walked around and acted like nothing had happened - like nothing [i]was[/i] happening. After a thousand years, they'd found a sort of stability with the resources left behind, but the clock was ticking and the boarders weren't getting any wider. He could see the entire front lawn of the university of his window, and day by day, more kith trotted across the dewy green yard with human allies at their side. People were hesitant, but yielding. Change was blowing in from all directions and Lycus felt like he was the only one panicking. Through it all, the tatters still loomed. The literal edge of reality. It was a proof of mortality more poignant than a corpse, dark and heavy as a black hole. Piper mentioned gossip over the dinner table of a student planning to go in looking for a lost relative, and his dad turned into a live wire right there at the dinner table, all shuddering nerves. The world hadn't ended - it was end[i]ing[/i], little by little every day, and Lycus could feel it. Everything else was secondary. Food, sleep, and happiness were all to be easily ignored footnotes in the future documentation of Lycus's discoveries. He had no time for them. So he didn't eat, he didn't sleep, and he didn't stop working. The meeting with Kei next week - one that threatened to become a usual occurrence - was the only respite he could allow himself. If he didn't do it, the distraction of Piper's nagging would outweigh whatever time he spent in that disgusting sweaty room. In short, he was looking forward to it. (ok honestly u guys i can't say how much the encouragement is genuinely and deeply appreciated. thank u)

Kei, as always, was punctual as could be and looking far too chipper for seven in the morning. "Morning, sleeping beauty! You eat breakfast yet?" Kei was standing at the doorway in loose, easy exercise pants and a startlingly tight shirt. It showed off his muscles in the most obvious of ways, curving around the defining features, the slight swell of ab muscle, still hanging low on his neck - Lycus blinked blearily and wiped his mind clean. He was still wearing his fuzzy duck-print pajama pants and an extraordinarily tired expression. "Are you [i]supposed [/i]to eat before you w-work out?" "Of course! Darling, I'm suddenly very worried about you. Have you skipped breakfast every time you've gone to the gym?" Lycus snorted. "Well, I-I'd have to gather more data to be sure on that one. I haven't been to the gym s-since...uh...I think e-ever." Kei made an expression like he had watched Lycus burn his wigs first-hand. "You [i]what?[/i]" (this lil scene isn't done, that wasn't supposed to be a punchline, i'm just fallin asleep)

Oh wow, we're getting [i]multiple installments[/i] tonight, it's a banner day suddenly. And to think this was going to be a mundane time when I woke up. Boom! Everything is better! Thank you Z
