Negotiation
Tutorial TutorialNegotiation 1
Listen, I haven't been on Neopets in forever. But one thing that stands out in my memory was the ability to negotiate prices when buying things from NPCs.
Prices for items are randomized between a certain range, and there's a limited amount of time to buy things.
Let's say you've been waiting all day to buy an item, and then....you're only ~10 shards short. There's not enough time to scrape those last few shards together. What if you could negotiate the price down just those few last shards?
It wouldn't be accessible for buying premium items (like from the Headmaster's Office). It probably wouldn't be guaranteed to work, and you couldn't drastically argue down (if the item is selling for 500, you can't offer 100 and be accepted).
Thoughts?

Oooo hm!! I feel like the limited amount of time might make this awkward? Like, I'm often scrambling enough as it is to make all the purchases that I need to make in the limited time frame -- and if negotiation wasn't instantaneous or required any loading at all, it'd be hard to gauge how many negotiations you had time to make before the item disappeared, which could add a level of frustration to purchasing -- since TW is a game where items are often more rare than money, I'm not sure this would be worth the very rare occasions when it'd be useful
Not to mention that if something is sold in shops, you always have the option of taking the time to save up a little extra and sending your kith out to buy it (Kith > Kith Activities). So if the fear is "but what if I can't afford it during my one and only opportunity to buy it?" then never fear! -- you have another opportunity that isn't time sensitive, it's just slower and a bit pricier. You have time to save up if you really need it!
---
All of that said.... while I don't like the idea of a negotiate button that lets you like, type in a new price and all that, because the TW purchasing system feels way too fast-paced for that (especially when you have multiple remnants unlocked and you're checking all of them to try to buy the rares you need.....), the idea of rerolling the price is an interesting thought.
There's a bunch of different ways that could go. I don't like the idea of that being a thing that you can always do, but maybe there could be items that allow you X number of rerolls (A craftable "negotiator's potion"? A premium "book of coupons"?) That feels more doable to me -- seeing the price of the item and hitting "reroll" a couple of times and choosing whether to take it or leave it. Or!! what if it's a job your kith could learn -- assign one of your kith to "negotiating" as their kith activity and give you a couple rerolls every shop refresh (or whatever would be reasonably balanced against collecting 3000 shards)
TL;DR I'm not strictly opposed; I don't think I'd want it to work the way neopets' system does, but there are some other, more conditional options that sound kind of cool :O

Those are very good points and I'm interested in the alternative options you've suggested!! Thank you for your input, it's very helpful :D

Ooh, the alternative options Shazz suggested sound pretty interesting! I know sometimes if you're searching for a rare item in a crowded shop, it can be annoying to see it finally show up but at the highest price. A limited way of rerolling the price to try for a cheaper option would be interesting!

No, please, no
The haggling back in neo was a pain, it required you to tip 3/4 number each time you want a buy something, it feels too slow and inconvenient, moreover, if you miss a key and type "494" instead of "949" and the shooptaker pushed you out. even if you were no pushed away, you missed that few seconds you needed to purchase the item

I understand your aversion to my original concept for it; how would you feel about the alternatives Shazzbaa offered?
