For tips from me, I'd say....
1.) Don't be scared of the forums! Like Science said, you can get shards from posting, and everyone in the forums is super friendly! Even if you just check in on a few threads or join in the forum games, people will be happy to see new people around.
(And we can also answer any questions you have!)
2.) Pay attention to quests. Daily quests are super useful because they prevent you from losing friendship with NPCs! Every day, you lose 1 friendship point with them, and completing an hourly or daily quest adds 1 friendship point. Dailies are cheap and easy, and can get you currency or cheap items!
Hourly quests are good for earning money, if you know which are good. You'll start to pick up on which are good as you play more, but there's threads in the Site Guides forums if you want tips. And don't be afraid to cancel quests if you have trouble - you don't lose anything from declining.
Unique quests can rewards you with cool story, rarer items or even unlock areas of the world, so make sure to keep an eye on those and try to complete them where possible! They're expensive for a new player, but the rewards are worth it.

Welcome welcome welcome! Well it seems that Science and Himochi covered a lot of things, but I'll drop a few things in as well.
1) Like Himochi said, there is no detriment to declining an hourly quest, and in some cases it probably will be beneficial- some may be way to difficult or expensive to get the item for at this point, so it is ok to drop it. Definitely check out guides to see what kind of reward a quest gives to see if it is worth it.
2) You may notice some items that quests ask for that you can't find in the Hope stores- one of the unique quest storylines unlock a new section called the Enchanted Forest. You can unlock this early by purchasing a scanner from the marketplace, but I recommend going through the unique questline either way since it gives a little insight into some of the characters.
3) Final thing is cooking- the appliances are indeed quite expensive, and I don't necessarily recommend getting into stocking it right away, but it is good to note that as you level up cooking, the reward get higher. Cooking raises your kith's power, speed and guard depending on the recipe cooked- as you level up, you gain more each time you cook, so it is definitely helpful in the long run for raising you kith's stats.
Anyways, hopefully that was a bit helpful, but don't hesitate to ask any questions if you have them. Welcome again to Hope!

Hello and welcome to Hope! The only useful tip I have which hasn't already been said is that the game Memory provides the most shards in relation to time spent playing! :)

Gwaihir covered most of the stuff, but there are also a few clothing items found in other stores as well, though in smaller amounts - Campus Supplies has some school clothing like briefcases and pencils for behind your ear, and the Salon has headphones as well as all the hairstyles and face items!
