As it may be clear, I'm a newbie! Pleased to be here! Seems like a cool site so far (:
One thing I'm curious about though, and I may have missed something and I'm sorry if my question has an obvious answer,
Do quests that you take on expire? It appears that specific things can take a while to show up in shops so I just wonder if there's a time limit to these fetch quests.
also what's the deal with all those fringes in the lab lol

Quests do not expire, you have as much time as you like to complete them.
The lab does tend towards hair, lol -it's mostly that anything else gets taken so those are the only things left after a while. People do donate plenty of other things, but they never seem to make it all the way through the timer.
Things left there for 24 hours get used by Lycus to power the experiment bar -when it's full, we get a new item from Lycus, that anyone can take as much of as they like for 24 hours, and then it disappears. Eventually when we have enough of those items unlocked we've been told that they'll be available as a premium bundle from Nic's office, but for now that's the only way to get them. It's a community effort, but it's still fairly slow going.

Welcome welcome welcome! Indeed, you can take as long as you want with quests! Though as an aside, declining quests also don't hurt you in any way (excluding the unique quests, don't decline those- but hourlies there are no negative consequences). So if you have been stuck on a quest for awhile and can't seem to get the right item, feel free to decline and see if you get an easier one the next hour!

Welcome to Hope! People here are pretty easy going in terms of answering questions, but the wikis pretty decent as well.

Welcome to the site! You're right that it can take a while for a specific item to show up in a shop, but the Marketplace and the Marketplace forum are good ways to find an item more quickly.
The hairstyles in the lab are there because you get them for free from Kei's daily quest, and nothing really uses them. Most other items are consumable or requested by quests.

@Sefria Thanks for the in-depth explanation of the lab! I figured that progress bar must have had something to do with the whole community but wasn't sure what the end goal was! Sounds really exciting hahaa
