Hello! Thank you for taking your time to see this. I'm not the most social person around, but this community seems very friendly, so I thought I'd give it a go. ^.^
If it's not too much to ask for, may I get some advice on how to progress on this site?
That's all from me for now~

Hello!
So you joined at a good time for that, because this month all the games pay out double shards, which are useful in many ways. So playing games helps; in general, the higher the difficulty setting of a game, the higher the payout. For memory, you can repeat any level and continue to make gains without having to redo previous levels (there are only 4 levels of that game). Posting also gains you shards -the first post each minute gives you 50 shards.
For filling out your avatar, many items in the Marketplace are listed for a lower price than you can get them from the NPC stores, because...
Quests can give very useful rewards.
Of course, some of them can give you rewards you don't need; there are several user guides in that section of the forums to help you figure out which are which.
Something to be aware of is that the Daily quests from the NPCs are always very good deals; you pay a small amount of shards for an item which is usually worth quite a bit more, or you need not pay anything at all.
Hourly quests only change if you decline or complete them, so if you see a quest you don't think you can do before the hour is over, feel free to decline it so you can get a new one (unless it's one you really want to do, for the reward, in which case of course hang on to it). Doing so doesn't hurt your reputation with the NPC -but there is a slow attrition rate of 1 point of reputation per day. Doing ANY quest with that NPC will fix that: including the dailies.
If you get reputations high enough, the NPCs change pose, have new things to say to you, and it also unlocks new quest options from them.
Story quests, or unique quests, NEVER DECLINE! It may be hard, but you'll not be able to get them again or replace them if you decline them, so just let it sit on what you're stuck with until you can find what you need. Posting for help in the Market area of the forum is a great way to finish them.
Speaking of the Market area, there's a charity section which will also help you out.
There's more, I'm sure, but I'm kind of tired right now and that makes me forgetful.
Anyhow if you do have specific questions, the User Q&A section is your friend! People are usually really helpful.

Welcome welcome welcome! THIS GUIDE links to both the tutorial and has some good overall information to get started. Other general tips-
-there are three types of quests you can do- hourly, daily, and unique. Hourly are the ones you can do throughout the day- some will be easier than others. Declining an hourly quest does not hurt you in any way, so if the quest seems too difficult, feel free to decline.
-Daily happens once a day, and most require a few shards, while a few are free. Doing these daily will net you some items, 1 gem from the headmaster, and will keep reputation levels from the NPCs from dropping. -Finally, unique are story quests- no matter how difficult these seem, don't decline these- they are all worth it in the end, and you can only do them once.
I'm sure others will have good advice as well, but if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Eeek. Hopefully tagging works. That's a lot to quote!) @Sefria Thank you for the helpful information! That cleared up many things I was a little confused about. ^.^
@Dreadnoughtus I didn't realize the inportance of quests until now. Thankfully, I haven't touched anything in that category yet. Thank you for the helpful information!

pinging works, if you use square brackets around the at sign and the name, but I'm not sure if it works in all forum sections or just some...

Welcome to Hope! <3
Most of my usual advice has been already posted, so I'll just give you my usual advice for newbies: if you ever have questions or need help with anything at all, don't be afraid to come ask us!
We were all newbies too once, so we know what it's like, and we're all super friendly so you shouldn't need to worry about asking us for help. <3
Oh, and also!
To help your Kith grow, you need to increase their stats. Once you get their stats all to 100+, 200+ etc, you can unlock new stages you can change them to, and once you have 400+ in every stat, you get a new slot to befriend a new Kith!
So raising your Kith is a nice goal to keep in mind. <3 Generally, rarer items or cooked foods give more stats. <3
Anyway, I hope you enjoy your time on the site! :D

Welcome!
I find doing quests is a good way to progress. Collect tools, roses, dyes, and cleaning supplies as those are really popular items in quests.
