Salutations

Hi, I'm a new user and I've been generally wandering around the site. Does anybody know how the stats correspond in battling?

Hello and welcome! There isn't a really detailed guide for this currently, but I do have a brief writeup over here in my newbie guide. During battle there is a tab to look at your stats, the Snarls stats, and history of attacks, which will have some of that info. There is also a Snarl Compendium Guide, but it currently only has the older Hope Snarls.

Welcome to Hope!
Okay so the battle system is really interesting and not like most of the others I've seen. I spend a LOT of time battling. With the current set, you're going to want to build around Outwit. You *need* to be able to stop them in their tracks or you'll be overwhelmed. Outwit isn't as useful in larger group battles like we used to have, but in the current one-to-three sets that come at us right now, it's invaluable. I mean seriously invaluable. Nothing else comes close - all the other equivalents have a cooldown.
Now, to make sure your Outwit is as effective as possible, you'll want to pump your Reason. I suggest raising your stats more or less evenly anyhow TBH just for the sake of raising through the Kith stages. But for battle purposes you'll want to emphasize the stats your Kith's Strategies draw on, and Outwit is a Reason-based move.
Beyond that, the options open up a lot more. I have a number of builds that all work more or less equally well. If you don't want to ever have to use a healing item, though, I suggest Outwit plus two moves that provide HP regain - stuff like Absorb, Liven Up, and Taunt. DOT moves are also quite effective; one of my more effective fighters uses Outwit/Taunt/Bully.
If you use a DOT (damage over time) move instead of a second healing move, you may have to use a healing item once per series (the five-battle sets from Petty to Devastating). Sometimes twice if you get a particularly nasty set of spawns or mess up the timing. (Yes, timing of move use matters! Always open with Outwit, and choose your target wisely. Even I'm still mastering that part.)
FWIW, here are some builds that have worked very well for me:
Outwit/Taunt/Absorb (my sweet little Ulusive girl is a BATTLE MONSTER with this set, seriously; I also use this same combo for my Nibblug)
Outwit/Bully/Absorb (my Veilious uses this, also highly effective... although try not to imagine what it looks like when a Veilious uses Absorb *shudder*)
Outwit/Liven Up/Bleed (using this on my Lumence - he has to heal about once per set if at all, but it's still highly effective and he does frequently make it through without needing a heal item)
Outwit/Taunt/Rebuff (this is more of a team battle build, using an AOE as it does, but it definitely works for my Trimerus)
So just pick a moveset, then raise all your stats so you can resist incoming moves, but with slight emphasis on the stats your own moves rely on. So for example, Outwit is based on Reason, Absorb is based on Health, and Bully is based on Power. So for an Outwit/Bully/Absorb build you'd want to put some extra into Reason, Power, and Health.
