Hello and welcome!
Are you just starting out making custom items and have questions about how to do it or need advice on making something work or just how this whole custom item thing works? This thread is a space where you can ask the community for advice and information on making custom items!
For official judgements on site rules for what's allowed when making customs items, please message Club or ask in User Q&A! Folks here can only speak unofficially as people with a lot of experience making items.
This is also a space for folks already making items to share knowledge with each other, because there's always something new to learn!
No matter what your experience level in art or item-making, please feel free to use this thread!
I don't want to bog us down in a bunch of rules, but be kind. This is a learning space; please be constructive in your criticisms and advice.

Thread open! I'm going to kick this off by asking creators a question!
What is the number one thing you wish you'd known before you started making custom items? The big, almost life-changing thing you learned as you worked?
For me, I know I just did not expect recolors of custom items to be a big thing and vastly underestimated the importance of setting up my files to be easily recolored. So many files where I have a base color and then a mess of shading all lumped together on a second layer which has made adjusting colors and shading, uh, challenging, in some cases. I've been going back to some older pieces I like and picking these apart for future me, but I wish past me had known and not left all this work for current me.

Oh big agree on setting up for recolors down the road rip my couple private items tbh but we'll, at least those aren't ones people will ask me for recolors
I think my biggest thing is like, you may be surprised at what gets popular/sponsors? I've had things get sponsored that I wasn't expecting anyone to like but me, and others where I spent a lot of time on/thought would be popular and weren't as much as I thought. So basically just like, go with what you would like imo, cause you never know what might catch someone's eye!

I’m seconding the nicely separated layers thing.
Also adding: I wish past me realised that it makes more sense to redraw items over the chest rather than attempting to just use transform tool and minor edits.
My earlier items have a lot of issues with looking strange in different poses because I wanted to avoid redrawing, but erasing all the lines around the chest and completely redrawing for fem vs masc bases both looks better to me, and is easier to work with in the future. (A lot of the layering got mushed and became harder to work with for recolours)
A very minor one, but for clothing submissions specifically - including a colour name for your first item, and saving the description in a text file somewhere.
Naming colour saves you having to get the item renamed if you make recolours later, ensures the item isn’t assigned a different colour name later, and prevents forum item code breaking due to updates!
Saving description just helps when you’re trying to submit recolours and don’t remember at all what you wrote haha.

Haha, mine is setting up for recolours, too! Though in a slightly different way. I did plan for making different colours, I just didn't plan......... in a way that worked well with TW items.

the other big Mindblowing Thing That Maybe Everyone Else Knew Already was how much gradients can help. Steph actually showed me this when I was fighting with my very first premium item, the Spider Queen Dress -- the shading and everything was fine, but just adding a basic colour gradient over top took it the extra step from "oh that looks nice" to "DANG I LOVE THIS"

Most of my premium items now make use of gradients, even if they're subtle; they make a huge difference -- and that's another thing that's easy to lock-transparency and slap a new colour on there if you end up wanting to do a recolour!

Yes! The way Shazz shows in her Current Method is the way I do mine these days. Soooo much easier for recolors!
